Reynoldsburg and Gahanna both winners in first Spirit Sprint 5k

NEWS RELEASE

REYNOLDSBURG TAKES GAHANNA BY NARROW MARGIN IN THE CARDINAL ORTHOPAEDIC INSTITUTE'S INAUGURAL SPIRIT SPRINT 5K RUN/WALK ON APRIL 11
Event raises funding and support for both school districts' Safe Routes to School programs

DETAILED RACE RESULTS

COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 13, 2010) On Sunday, April 11, The Cardinal Orthopaedic Institute partnered with the Gahanna and Reynoldsburg school districts to host the inaugural Spirit Sprint 5k Run/Walk event to benefit each district's Safe Routes to School programs.

Each school was charged with registering as many walkers and runners as possible. And this year, the Reynoldsburg Raiders took the prize with 33 percent of total registrants, compared with Gahanna's 27 percent. The district with the most registered participants earned 75 percent of the registration proceeds (and all the bragging rights!); and the runner-up earned the remaining 25 percent.

The Raiders were awarded the trophy and $1,995 to benefit the districts' Safe Routes to School program. Gahanna didn't walk away empty-handed; the district received the remaining $665.

The goal of Safe Routes is to improve safety and encourage more children to walk and bike to school. In the process, programs are working to improve overall physical health, reduce traffic congestion and better the environment --making communities more livable for everyone. "Reynoldsburg's Safe Routes to School Program is entirely grant funded. In addition to the direct goals of the National Safe Routes programs, we try to involve our students in identifying problems and coming up with solutions," said Tricia Moore, community outreach coordinator, Reynoldsburg City Schools. "This donation will help us provide valuable educational experiences to children. For example, we plan to use a portion of the donation to purchase video equipment and related materials that students can use to document safety issues and efforts to fix them. Student involvement in local projects like this helps develop the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they'll need to be successful."

"We were so pleased to see such enthusiasm from both school districts!" said Dr. Joel Politi, president, The Cardinal Orthopaedic Institute. "This was truly a win-win for everyone. As an orthopedic practice, we were excited to offer a healthy community activity. And both schools received funding to support programs that will continue to foster a healthier, more active, environment for everyone."

The day also featured family-friendly fun with music, refreshments and inflatables. Representatives from school and community organizations in both cities were on-hand as well, including the parks and recreation departments and school levy committees.
