Cardinal Announces First Tenant at New Office in Business First
Cardinal Orthopaedic Signs First Tenant for New Office
By: Matt Burns, Columbus Business First
With less than two months to go before Cardinal Orthopaedic Institute opens the doors of an expanded east-side office, the practice has signed the first tenant for space it’s leasing out to other specialties.
The Columbus-based practice said it’s on track to begin seeing patients Nov. 2 at its 86,000-square-foot building in the medical office park near Mount Carmel East Hospital. The $15 million facility, which began construction a year ago, merges two existing offices that were at full capacity and will lead to the creation of up to 25 jobs.
Cardinal spokeswoman Stephanie Rauschenbach said Thursday that the practice is leasing about 2,000 square feet at the building to Physical Medicine Associates Inc., a rehabilitation practice based on Olentangy River Road near Riverside Methodist Hospital. The space the practice has signed up to occupy for seven years is a piece of 10,000 square feet Cardinal has opened up to specialties that complement its practice.
Cardinal has had talks with other practices to fill up the remaining space, including a rheumatology practice, but Rauschenbach said Physical Medicine is the only tenant signed for now.
“At this point, we aren’t in any serious conversations with other potential tenants,” she said.
Dr. Brandon Thompson, a physician with Physical Medicine who’s moving to the new facility, said the practice plans to open its doors at the Cardinal office in December. The practice chose the space because of its proximity to Mt. Carmel and to accommodate growing demand, he said.
“The population is getting older and more and more musculoskeletal problems are cropping up,” Thompson said. “This (new building) opens up the possibility of combining multiple services under one roof, a one-stop shop for patients.”
The opening of the facility will mean the addition of physical and occupational therapy as well as an MRI machine to Cardinal’s operation, which employs 22 surgeons and more than 100 additional staffers. The practice also has pledged to create up to 25 jobs, 11 of which have been filled. Most of those new jobs, Rauschenbach said, are tied to the 12,000-square-foot Physical Therapy & Performance Center that’s set to open the last week of October, before the facility officially begins seeing patients. The new ancillary service will be staffed with 14 full-time therapists and trainers.
Physical Medicine, which employs eight physicians and about a dozen other staff members, is adding at least three jobs at the center, one of which is a full-time physician, Thompson said.
Cardinal Orthopaedic is Central Ohio’s second-largest orthopedic practice, with 18,000 new patients last year, according to Columbus Business First research. In addition to its east-side operation, Cardinal runs a Hilliard center and part-time offices in Grove City, Westerville and Powell.
